Best Wineries In Napa Valley For A Romantic Getaway

Here are some of my favorite wineries for a couple retreat.

Castello di Amorosa

If you’re a wine lover with a soft spot for history and a flair for the dramatic, Castello di Amorosa in Napa Valley is an absolute must-visit. A medieval-inspired castle perched on a hill, surrounded by vineyards as far as the eye can see. It’s a winery that blends wine with a hefty dose of old-world charm. The setting is impressive, to say the least.

In short, located in Calistoga, Castello di Amorosa is a 13th-century Tuscan-style castle that will transport you to medieval Europe. The mastermind behind this stunning castle is Dario Sattui, a fourth-generation winemaker with a deep love for history and architecture. The castle took over 15 years to build, and we’re not talking about some modern-day replica. Dario wanted authenticity, so he went all out, using traditional methods and materials sourced from Europe to create a true medieval masterpiece.

The castle itself is an eight-level, 121,000 square-foot marvel complete with everything you’d expect from a 13th-century fortress—moats, drawbridges, a dungeon, and even a chapel. It’s a labor of love that reflects Dario’s passion for wine and history, and honestly, the attention to detail is mind-blowing.

Location & Vibe

Just a short drive from the town of Calistoga, if you’re planning a visit, be prepared for the wow factor as you approach the castle. The surrounding vineyards and the castle itself make for a pretty epic first impression. The vibe here is a unique blend of old-world elegance and laid-back California wine country charm.

You’ve got this grand, medieval castle setting the scene, but the atmosphere is still warm and welcoming. It’s not stuffy or pretentious at all, which I really appreciate. Staff puts into making sure everyone has a great experience. They’re super knowledgeable and genuinely enthusiastic about sharing the castle’s history and the wines they produce.

Tasting Options & Prices

Now, let’s talk tastings—because that’s why we’re all here, right? Castello di Amorosa offers several tasting options, so there’s something for everyone, whether you’re a casual sipper or a serious wine enthusiast.

  • Seated Tasting Experience: This is the most straightforward option. For $60, you get to taste five highly acclaimed Reserve and Current-Release wines, access to the castle, with self-guided access to the two main levels. Access to the Courtyard, Truncated tower, Chapel, Great Hall and Knights Hall Gift shop.
  • Diamond Estate Tour & Tasting: For $75, you get an intimate, adults-only, experience that offers a selection of five wines, including Reserves and our non-alcoholic Muscat Canelli Grape Juice.
  • Cheese & Charcuterie Wine Pairing Tour: Cheese and charcuterie lovers, this one’s for you. For $115, you’ll get the guided tour, followed by a tasting of wines expertly paired with artisanal local cheeses and cured meat. It’s an intimate, romantic, adults-only experience in which you’ll get the chance to taste a selection of six wines, including Reserves and Flagship wines.
  • Cabernet Is King: If you’re looking to dive a bit deeper into Cabs, I’d recommend this option. It’s $$175-$195 per person and includes delectable bites, Cabernet from the celebrated Melanson Vineyard, Cabernet from the Morisoli-Borges vineyard, Cabernet from Coombsville AVA, one of Napa’s newest rising stars, and compare it with a La Castellana Super Tuscan blend, one of their most complex wines.
  • Luxury Tour & Tasting Offerings: For the most splurge private experience at the Castello, opt for this curated tour and tasting. Ideal for that perfectly exclusive and intimate, from the “Argento” experience to the premier “Diamante” experience. Check the price with the Hospitality Department.
  • Il Passito Room: The Il Passito Room offers an intimate and luxurious setting, perfect for private events during weekdays or evening hours. This elegant space is ideal for hosting private or large group tastings or wine and food pairings. Step outside to a secluded terrace where you’ll be treated to stunning views of the hilltop watchtower and the crush pad below. Whether you’re planning an outdoor grill party using the built-in barbecue, a casual luncheon, or an open-air reception, this exclusive spot—tucked away from the main areas of the Castello—provides some of the most breathtaking sunset views in the Diamond Mountain region.

Wine Recommendations

Alright, let’s get into the good stuff—the wine! Castello di Amorosa has a wide variety of wines, so there’s something to suit every palate. Here are a few that really stood out to me during my visit:

  • 2017 La Castellana: This Super Tuscan-style blend is a real showstopper. It’s rich and complex, with layers of dark fruit, spice, and just the right amount of tannin. Perfect for pairing with a hearty meal or enjoying on its own.
  • 2020 Chardonnay: If you’re a fan of white wines, their Chardonnay is a must-try. It’s got a beautiful balance of creamy texture and bright acidity, with notes of apple, pear, and a hint of vanilla. Really smooth and easy-drinking.
  • 2018 Il Butala Vineyard: This single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Coombsville AVA is one of their flagship wines, and for good reason. It’s bold, with deep flavors of blackberry, plum, and a touch of oak. It’s a wine that demands attention and pairs beautifully with a nice steak.
  • 2018 Il Barone: Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon showcases dense flavors of dark berries, and baking spice. The wine has powerful, structured tannins and excellent long-term aging potential.

Food & Dining

Now, while Castello di Amorosa doesn’t have a full-service restaurant on-site, they do offer some tasty food options that complement their wines perfectly. During the wine and food pairing tours, you’ll get to sample some delicious bites that are expertly matched with the wines. If you’re looking to extend your visit, I’d recommend bringing a picnic to enjoy in one of the nearby scenic spots, or heading into Calistoga for some local dining options. There are some great restaurants in the area that focus on farm-to-table cuisine.

Practical Tips

Before you plan your visit, here are a few practical tips to ensure you have the best experience at Castello di Amorosa:

  • Book in Advance: This place is popular, so I highly recommend booking your tasting or tour in advance, especially if you’re visiting on a weekend or during peak season.
  • Dress Comfortably: While the castle vibe might tempt you to dress up, remember that you’ll be doing a fair bit of walking, including some steps and uneven ground. Comfortable shoes are a must.
  • Plan for Photos: The castle and surrounding vineyards are stunning, so don’t forget your camera or smartphone. There are plenty of photo ops that you won’t want to miss.
  • Take Your Time: There’s a lot to see and taste, so don’t rush your visit. Plan to spend at least a couple of hours exploring the castle and enjoying the wines.
  • Designate a Driver: As with any wine-tasting adventure, make sure you have a plan for getting back safely. Whether it’s a designated driver, a rideshare service, or one of the many wine tour operators in the area, it’s important to enjoy responsibly.

Far Niente has a rich history that adds layers of character to every glass of wine you’ll enjoy here. Founded in 1885 by John Benson, this winery has stood the test of time, surviving prohibition and emerging as one of Napa’s most celebrated estates. The name “Far Niente” means “without a care” in Italian, which perfectly sums up the vibe here. It’s a place where time slows down, and you can just breathe in the beauty around you. After a period of abandonment, the winery was lovingly restored in the late 1970s, and it has been producing some of Napa Valley’s finest wines ever since.

Location & Vibe

Far Niente is tucked away in the Oakville AVA, one of Napa Valley’s premier wine-growing regions. The moment you drive up the tree-lined avenue, you’ll know you’ve arrived somewhere special. The estate is surrounded by beautiful gardens, towering oak trees, and, of course, rows upon rows of vineyards. The architecture of the winery is a stunning mix of old-world charm and elegance, with the historic stone building as its centerpiece. The vibe here is serene and sophisticated, but not in a stuffy way. It’s the kind of place where you can feel both pampered and completely at ease. Trefethen Family Vineyard

If you’re on the lookout for authentic, family-driven winemaking, then let me introduce you to Trefethen Family Vineyard. This place is the real deal—no pretense, just excellent wine, and a warm, welcoming vibe. The estate was originally founded in 1886 by a group of settlers who recognized the potential of Napa Valley’s fertile soils. Fast forward to 1968, when the Trefethen family purchased the property and began restoring it to its former glory. What I love about Trefethen is how it’s still family-owned and operated to this day. It’s rare to find a winery of this size that’s managed to keep that personal touch. The Trefethens have always focused on sustainability and quality, which comes through in every bottle they produce.

Location & Vibe

Trefethen Family Vineyard is located in the Oak Knoll District, just a short drive from downtown Napa. The moment you arrive, you’ll notice the laid-back, unpretentious atmosphere. The estate is surrounded by beautiful vineyards, with the historic redwood winery building as the centerpiece. The grounds are impeccably maintained, with lush gardens and picturesque views. The vibe here is all about relaxation—no rushing, no crowds, just pure relaxation. It’s the kind of place where you can take your time, soak in the scenery, and savor the wine.

Tasting Options & Prices

Trefethen offers a variety of tasting experiences + virtual ones, so there’s something for everyone, whether you’re a wine newbie or a seasoned connoisseur.

  • Winery Flights: Starting at $45 per person for a 60-minute experience, complimentary for members. Upon arrival, guests can choose from—Essentials, Small Lots, or All Reds. Each flight offers a tasting of five different wines, providing a perfect introduction to the Trefethen style with a special focus on estate-grown wines.
  • Vineyard Tour and Tasting: Prices start at $75 per person, or $60 for members, for a 90-minute experience. If you’re eager to explore more in-depth, the Reserve Tasting is ideal. Your visit includes a guided walk through the vineyards.
  • Taste the Estate at The Villa: Starting at $90 per person. For those seeking a more immersive experience, this tour is essential. You’ll begin with a vineyard walk, followed by a visit to the historic winery building. Wine Recommendations

Now, let’s talk wine—because that’s what we’re here for, right? Trefethen is known for producing some outstanding wines, and while it’s hard to pick favorites, here are a few that stood out to me.

  • Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2019: This wine greets you with rich aromas of cassis and dark berries, complemented by earthy hints of toasty oak and nutmeg. On the palate, it’s substantial, offering deep flavors of plum and dark cherry, accented by a touch of black pepper. The experience culminates in a long, fruit-forward finish.
  • O.K.D. FIVE Red Blend 2021: Expect deep, enticing aromas of dark fruit and cherry, intertwined with earthy notes of bay leaf and black pepper. The palate is lively and concentrated, with flavors of dried cherry and fig, enhanced by spicy undertones of cinnamon and sage, leading to a long, refreshing finish.
  • Foundation Cabernet Sauvignon 2014: When you’re ready to treat yourself, the Foundation Cabernet is a top choice. As the winery’s signature wine, it offers rich, layered flavors. This is a wine meant for celebrating life’s special moments.

Food & Dining

While Trefethen doesn’t have an on-site restaurant, they do offer a small cheese plate with some of their tastings, which pairs wonderfully with their wines. If you’re planning a romantic getaway, though, you’ll probably want to venture out for some dining as well. Here are a few of my favorite spots nearby:

Monticello Vineyards

Monticello Vineyards is one of those hidden gems that isn’t always the first place people mention, but once you’ve been there, you can’t help but tell everyone about it. Monticello has this unique blend of history, charm, and seriously good wine that makes it perfect for a romantic getaway or just a laid-back day of wine tasting. In short, Monticello will absolutely hit your romantic spot.

Monticello Vineyards was founded by the Corley family in 1969, which is pretty young by Napa Valley standards. But what they’ve done in that time is impressive. The Corleys were among the pioneers of Napa Valley, planting some of the first vineyards in what’s now recognized as one of the top wine regions in the world. The winery is named after Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello estate, which is fitting since Jefferson was a huge wine lover himself. You’ll see the homage in their architecture, too—there’s a gorgeous replica of Monticello right on the property. But beyond the history and the pretty buildings, what makes Monticello special is the family. V. Sattui Winery

Located in St. Helena, V. Sattui Winery is a family-owned winery that should not be missed on your romantic getaway. The property is famous for its beautiful picnic grounds, cheese shop, Italian-style deli, and astounding vineyard views. With over sixty wines to choose from, you can take your pick and walk over to their picnic grounds or find a quiet spot amidst the vines for both of you. If you want a more intimate and guided experience, the winery also offers private cave tours, barrel tastings, and reserve tastings for its visitors.

V. Sattui has a history that’s as rich and robust as its wines. Founded in 1885 by Vittorio Sattui (does the connection with Castello di Amorosa ring a bell!), an Italian immigrant, the winery has roots that go deep into the traditions of winemaking. Like many wineries, Prohibition hit V. Sattui hard, and they had to shut their doors for a while. But in 1976, the great-grandson, Dario Sattui, revived the winery with a vision. Since then, V. Sattui has grown into one of the most beloved and most popular Napa Valley wineries.

Location & Vibe

Located in the heart of Napa Valley, V. Sattui Winery is right on the bustling St. Helena Highway, which means it’s super easy to find. But despite its central location, it somehow manages to feel like a hidden oasis. The moment you pull into the driveway, beautiful stone buildings, lush gardens, and rows of picnic tables under the shade of old oak trees are there to greet you. The vibe here is relaxed and inviting—think European countryside meets California cool. There’s no pretense, just a genuine passion for good wine and good times.

Tasting Options & Prices

One of the things we love about V. Sattui is that they offer a variety of tasting experiences. Wine Recommendations

Sattui has an impressive lineup of wines, but here are a few standouts that you definitely don’t want to miss:

  • Off-Dry Riesling: For those who enjoy lighter wine, this Riesling opens with tropical floral aromas of honeysuckle and fresh apricot. On the palate, it’s crisp and richly textured. The finish is fruity with refreshing acidity, leaving a lasting impression of dried fruit and subtle minerality.
  • 2022 Collina d’Oro Chardonnay: This Russian River Chardonnay has lively aromas of green apple and baking spice. The palate is creamy and soft, blending rich toasted oak with fresh notes of pear.
  • 2020 Reserve Stock Chardonnay Napa Valley: Aromas of lemon zest, stone fruit, and honeysuckle, complemented by cinnamon and crème brûlée notes. Its bright acidity balances the wine’s rich texture and leads to a creamy, lingering finish.
  • 2018 Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon: Showcases an inky black color and rich aromas of blackberry, black cherry, plum blossom, dried nutmeg, and savory spice. On the palate, it’s soft, round, and elegant, with intense fruit flavors, supple tannins, and a hint of cassis on the finish.
  • 2021 Black-Sears Zinfandel: Dark, savory aromas of black currant and green peppercorn. Its velvety texture is balanced by a bright, juicy cranberry zing, followed by taut tannins. Excellent aging potential.
