Or, for a more vineyard-focused stay, consider Château Grand Barrail, a luxury hotel surrounded by its own vines, just a short drive from Saint-Émilion.

5. Stay at an Organic Winery: Château de la Vieille Chapelle

 

For the eco-conscious wine lover, staying at an organic or biodynamic winery is a unique and rewarding experience. The Château de la Vieille Chapelle is an 11th century Roman Chapel, in the middle of a wine estate, on the edge of the Dordogne. It’s one of the most charming places to stay in the Gironde region. The estate, located in Lugon-et-Ile-du-Carnay, is run by Fabienne, Frédéric, and their family, who warmly welcome visitors into their passion-filled world of wine, organic farming, and biodynamics.

Why Visit Château de la Vieille Chapelle?

Château de la Vieille Chapelle produces a stunning array of organic and biodynamic wines with a special focus on rare, pre-philloxera varieties. What makes the wine here so special is the care and attention to every detail—no herbicides or pesticides, hand-harvesting, and minimal intervention in the cellar.

 

The estate’s commitment to the land is palpable. Since 2009, the vineyard has been fully organic, and in 2017, it achieved Demeter biodynamic certification. The family hosts daily wine tastings at 6:30 p.m. (free for guests, €6 for other visitors), where you can sample between three to six wines, followed by a tour of the cellar. It’s an intimate, educational experience.

 

Château de la Vieille Chapelle offers guest rooms and interesting spa & wellness treatments in the outbuildings of the chapel, providing a unique opportunity to stay right in the heart of the vineyard. The rooms are cozy and eco-friendly, with no televisions to promote relaxation and “disconnection.”

 

If you’re looking to stay elsewhere, here are a couple of other options. We already mentioned Château Hôtel Grand Barrail, a luxurious hotel located about 20 minutes away in Saint-Émilion. It’s a perfect spot if you’re looking for a touch of opulence after your wine adventure. For something a bit closer and more casual, Les Grands Vignobles in Libourne offers charming accommodations with beautiful vineyard views, just a 15-minute drive from the estate.

Where to Eat Near Château de la Vieille Chapelle

After a lovely day exploring the vineyard and enjoying a few glasses of wine, you’ll likely work up an appetite. Luckily, there are some fantastic places to eat nearby:

Where to Eat Near Les Sources de Caudalie

You won’t go hungry at Les Sources de Caudalie—trust me. They have several dining options that cater to all moods and occasions.
