🍇 Do you like Tannat? 🇫🇷➡️🇺🇾T 🍇 Do you like Tannat?
🇫🇷➡️🇺🇾This dark-skinned grape is native to Southwestern France and was brought to Uruguay by Basque settlers in 1870. It has found a second home in Uruguay and makes up around 24% of the total plantings in the country.
🍷 In France, the grape often produces wines that have big-time tannins with a touch of rusticity. The examples from Uruguay are softer and can be approached at a younger age. I always expect them to have notes of blueberry, black cherry, leather, and tobacco.
🎬 Stay tuned to the Exotic Wine Travel YouTube channel for a Tannat video that drops later today. Have a happy #tannatday
🙋 Raise your hands if you like Grenache! 🍇 🙋 Raise your hands if you like Grenache!
🍇 Grenache aka Garnacha aka Cannonau aka Tocai Rosso is one of the world's most planted red grapes. At one point in the late 20th century, it was up to the number two most common variety. There are delicious examples found everywhere from Mexico to the USA, Europe to Australia.
🍷This example is from the Roussillon in Southern France. The Mas Amiel, Voyage En Météore is mostly Grenache with a touch of Carignan aged in concrete from Maury. This is a very pretty red with notes of violets, black licorice, dried strawberry, and bubblegum. On the palate, the fruit remains but the floral and parched earth notes linger on. It has considerable weight for a wine that clocks in at 12.5% ABV. Big, tough tannins and a pleasant candy and floral note that lingers on. It's a Mediterranean red that doesn't go overboard.
❓Do you have a favorite example of Grenache?
🍇 Do you like Pinot Noir? 🎉 It's one of t 🍇 Do you like Pinot Noir?
🎉 It's one of the world's greatest wine grapes but often disappoints me. When examples are well done at great price points, there's reason to celebrate.
🍷 In certain vintages, the Prinčič Pinot Noir from Slovenia can be stellar - 2017 is one of those vintages. It is 100% Pinot Noir with a pretty nose of raspberry, earth, leather, and a touch of violets. The nose is unmistakably Pinot Noir. Silky and juicy on the palate with plenty of forest berry fruits. The wood is present here but it never takes away from the prettiness of the wine. The tannins are a little grippy and add some tug to the finish.
🤯 In Europe, this wine can be had under 10 Euros, which is an absolute steal!
